Spring Has Sprung, So We’re Having a Sale!

The flowers are in full bloom here at Once Upon a Sheep as we celebrate spring.

Crochet is a growing trend, and you can see Granny Squares everywhere! So we started a six-week crochet course on Tuesday afternoons, and 11 people responded! There are discussions about doing this again, so if you are interested, please email us at onceuponasheep@gmail.com.

For those who missed our big sale in February, we will pull out some discounted yarns that MUST GO! Up to 50%+ off!

21 Years This Month

Once Upon a Sheep was started in 2003. Originally, I opened the shop while I was at The Salvation Army in Maple Ridge, and it was owned by the Army. However, three years later, The Shepherd’s Heart Society was formed, and they purchased the business from The Salvation Army. I can’t believe that was 21 years ago.

Volunteering

Over the years, we’ve had many volunteers with whom we have been privileged to work. Knowing that we are helping children have a summer camp experience at Camp Sunrise is motivation enough, but doing that while working in a YARN SHOP is a delight to the knitters and crocheters who are our precious volunteers. If you have a few hours a week available and want to be a part of a great group of women, we are accepting volunteer applications. We would love for you to join our Once Upon a Sheep family.

The Economy

Our little shop has come through various fibre trends (remember fuzzy scarves?), a brisk market, a slow market, stock market crashes, and economic difficulties. Right now we are trying to hold on through a difficult economic situation. We are doing our best to bring you reasonably priced, good-quality yarns. As our sales increase, so will our ability to bring in more yarns. We know our customers will continue to support us and thank you for your loyal patronage.

See you on Saturday!

Kathie

Finally…Crochet Lessons

Crochet is the latest trend. We are seeing Granny Squares everywhere, even on celebrities on The Voice! We’ve had several calls and messages asking if we have crochet classes so we thought we better get one going.

Join us on Tuesday, March 12th at 1:00 pm for 6 weeks.

Cost: $15.00

You need to bring: A ball/skein of yarn and a crochet hook.

Choose a Double Knit or Worsted yarn. You could choose acrylic or cotton. We have a good selection of dishcloth cotton which is easy to use. We also have some inexpensive worsted-weight yarns as well.

For the crochet hook follow the instructions on the label for the size you need. If it is DK it should be 4 – 4.5mm. If you use worsted weight it should be 5- 5.5.

If you have any questions, please call the shop at 604-477-7445 or email onceuponasheep@gmail.com.

2nd Snow Day! Thursday, January 18th, 2024

Once Upon a Sheep is once again keeping our doors shut due to weather. We hope you are staying safe and warm indoors, except of course for building snowmen and making snow angels with the kids (and maybe even if you don’t have kids!) They’re predicting more snow and then it will turn to rain and freeze here in Maple Ridge. Yikes!

Here is another great project to work on, this one from Yarnspirations free pattern library. This could be a real stashbuster!

Stay safe and warm…

Snow Day Wednesday, January 17th, 2024

Today is not a good day to try driving in this weather. We want to keep our volunteers safe and our customers safe. So we will be closed today. I will post here if we open tomorrow as there is supposed to be freezing rain in Maple Ridge after this snow. Hopefully, it will melt away by the end of the week.

Here’s a great pattern to knit on a snow day, it’s called Snow Day Slouch.

If you have children at home, I know they are likely excited there is a snow day! Just like these little bunnies, they’ve been longing for one, I’m sure.

Have a wonderful day staying warm and cozy. We’ll see you when the weather clears, hopefully tomorrow.

Blessings!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…

Merry Christmas! All the volunteers at Once Upon a Sheep are sending their best to you. We appreciate all of you for supporting our dreams of creating a place for knitters and crocheters to find good yarns, a place of community where we can needle craft together, and most importantly, raise funds to send children for a summer camp experience each year. We’ve had a rough few years, but we have squeaked through, all down to you, our wonderful customers. This is why we are excited to offer you extra savings this week.

Fall Harvest & New Hours & SALE

Fall is my favourite season of the year. September this year was glorious and sunny, lasting even into October. However, now the colder temperatures have us pulling out our lovely handknit sweaters and cardigans to wear.

Fall is also the start of a new season when local yarn shops are putting out new yarns and showing off the new fall colours the yarn companies have brought to us. Once Upon a Sheep is no different. Our new yarns are out, a little late this year, but we got there. There are new colours added, and there’s been a juggling of the yarns for space. As you come into the store this fall, look for the “new” stickers on the cubbies.

This year we were very mindful of the cost of living and realize many of you have limited budgets and are digging into your stash. So we brought in a few yarns that are in the lower price range, focused on new colours in our blends, and are sticking with the old faithful on our shelves, sprucing them up with new colours. We’ve also brought in some beautiful items that will make great Christmas gifts – amigurumi kits, needle felting kits, yarn bowls and shawl pins.

Here are some of them:

Snowy Fluffy Fantasy Yarn by Katia is a blend of polyamide and viscose. You can find some great patterns here.

Soft Gratté, made of Acrylic and Polyamide, is particularly soft with a lovely loft to it. You can use it for adult or children’s garments, warm scarves and hats, and lovely baby items. See patterns here.

Back again OUAS, Berroco Remix Light is made from all recycled fibres – Nylon, Cotton, Acrylic, Silk, and Linen. It is surprisingly soft and there are 31 patterns to choose from on Berroco’s website, here. On the left of their pattern page, scroll down on the left to find the name of the yarn and choose it to see all the patterns.

Lopi is such a great yarn and sells well at OUAS so we thought we would expand the Lopi family and bring in a lovely, almost lace-weight yarn called Einband. Made of 100% new wool, it is great for shawls, light sweaters/cardigans, and lace knitting. See some beautiful patterns from Lopi Designs here. I particularly am fascinated with Gata and love Bylgja!

To say that our little shop has not suffered during the last few years would not be true. We likely survived because of the dedication of a few wonderful volunteers who give of their time every week to help run the shop. Our Board of Directors, who oversee the Shepherd’s Heart Society, have put every effort forward to keep the shop going through difficult financial times. All our profits go towards sending children to camp each summer and we have struggled thinking about how much less we have to give lately. However, we believe we still have a mission to fulfill – to provide a place for local women to shop, gather in community, and help local children have a wonderful summer camp experience. So please, we know you are spending wisely but remember our little shop and help us keep it open.

Come in and see our yarns for this season. For your convenience, we expanded our hours and are now staying late on Tuesday. It was easier to cover the hours between the shop’s usual closing and the drop-in start. Here are our new hours:

Happy Anniversary to Once Upon a Sheep! And some other stuff…

Friends, when I opened Once Upon a Sheep (OUAS) on April 5th, 2003, I had no idea it would still be in operation 20 years later. I remember the ladies from the seniors’ centre barging their way through a group of our shelter residents in order to find the yarn shop before we even opened. It was a great encouragement for me, knowing I was taking a risk.

By 2006 we formed The Shepherd’s Heart Society to oversee the shop and create a financial firewall between The Salvation Army and the shop. This proved to be the secret sauce in keeping OUAS afloat. Our board of directors, five of us since the beginning, and a few others who came and went along the way have done a superb job of keeping the shop on track and making sure the Purposes of the Society are the guiding lights for us.

Since the beginning, YOU helped us raise thousands of dollars for The Salvation Army’s Send a Kid to Camp program. As a child who attended these kinds of camps as a child, I cannot begin to describe the feeling of having a ‘vacation’ away from home. Most of the children we send to camp come from families where a vacation is something they can only dream of. For every dollar you spend at Once Upon a Sheep, we are able to continue to make summer camp a reality for children from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

So, to say THANK YOU…

We are celebrating our 20th anniversary with a

Like most businesses, we are struggling with the economic situation right now. Many shops in the Lower Mainland did not survive Covid, and now with the high cost of everything, more are in danger of closing down.

We also know many of you are struggling as well. When we tighten our belts, the first thing to go on our shopping list is discretionary spending. We understand and so we are doing our best to bring in some good quality yarns you can afford so you can continue your needlework during these next months. We survived the last 20 years through ups and downs in the yarn world. We will continue to survive!

Happy Knitting/Crocheting…. Kathie

See you at the SALE… and in the meantime…remember…
